MUSIC AT ST. ANDREW!
" Praise God with trumpet sounds; praise God with lute and harp!
Praise God with tambourine and dance; praise God with strings and pipe!
Praise God with clanging cymbals!
Let everything that breathes, praise the Lord!"
From Psalm 150
At St. Andrew Presbyterian Church we love music. Our worship is filled with music of all types and genres. Music touches our spirits. Music leads us to God. Music helps us praise God. Music draws us together as a community of faith. Our music includes the best of traditional music as well as popular contemporary Christian music.
CHOIR
Our 25-member choir has singers who are high school-age through retirement age and beyond!
Under the direction of Linda Robinson, the choir rehearses every Thursday during the school year at 7:00pm in the Choir Room at the church. New singers are always welcomed. We sing in worship approximately three times a month and present an annual Christams cantata the Sunday before Christmas. The music we sing ranges in style from traditional choral music to jazzy modern songs, to arrangement of traditional spirituals or Gospel music.
The choir is accompanied by pianist Tami Henry. At Christmas and occasional other times, the choir is accompanied by an ensemble of string and wind instruments.
PRAISE BAND
Dave Stockmal (an incredible keyboard player) is the director of our 11-person Praise Band. They help lead music in worship every Sunday throughout the year. Keyboard, guitars, bass, guitar, drums, and an occasional cello or violin accompany 4 or 5 singers as they lead the congregation each Sunday in songs of praise. Rehearsals are Saturday mornings at 8:00am in the church sanctuary. New members are always welcome.
ORGAN
Jean Hemphill is the church organist. She provides glorious organ music to lead us in singing some of the great hymns of the church. Most Sundays she also provides musical prelude prior to worship that calms our spirits and readies our hearts for worship. We appreciate the connection to past great Christian poets, theologians, and musicians that traditional hymns bring to us.
BELL CHOIR
The St. Andrew Bell Choir is composed of up to 10 ringers playing our two-octave set of Schulmrich handbells. Rehearsals will begin again this fall and new ringers will be welcome. Continue to check this webpage for more information about rehearsal times.
ST. ANDREW STRING ENSEMBLE
Occasionally throughout the year a group of St. Andrew string players gather together as a string ensemble to help lead worship. Several string players provide special solos through the year usually accompanied by piano or organ.
OUR CONCERT GRAND STEINWAY PIANO
Several years ago, St. Andrew was blessed with the gift of an incredible Steinway grand piano. It is played weekly in worship and is a favorite piano for local recitals and concerts.
ST. ANDREW AS A CONCERT VENUE
Musicians recognize the amazing acoustics for music in our sanctuary. Numerous local groups including The Yuba Sutter Symphony and Chorus, and The Yuba Sutter Master Chorale present concerts at St. Andrew. At Christmastime we are blessed to be able to host the annual performance of Handel's "Messiah" and "Messiah for Kids" presented by the YS Symphony and Chorus.
If you love all kinds of music, you will love our church. And we have a place where you can share your own musical talents. If you have questions, ask them here.
